James Cameron hates that movie for a reason. James Cameron: "I wrote the action. He wrote the politics."

Is that an actual quote by him? It is. www.imdb.com/title/tt0089880/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2Co-writer James Cameron claims that he only wrote the first draft of the script and that Sylvester Stallone made many changes to it. When the film was released, the "political" content of the movie was considered controversial. Many felt the Vietnam conflict was "altered" to look and sound heroic. Cameron commented that he only wrote the "action" and that Stallone wrote the "politics".James Cameron wrote the first draft which had Rambo going to rescue POW's at Vietnam with John Travolta. Seriously. Then Stallone re-wrote the script and eliminated the Travolta character. He wanted Rambo to be a one-man-army.

Haha that's hilarious, Cameron only wrote the action and left the plot and politics to Sly. He really only has himself to blame for that one.

Cameron only wrote the action and left the plot and politics to Sly. The plot was Cameron too. Sending Rambo to rescue POW's in Vietnam was his idea. He wrote Rambo II and Aliens at the same time. That's how he became famous in Hollywood before The Terminator was released.

You can argue it's his fault that Rambo went from believable soldier to the Rambo we all love to stereotype.

When I saw James Cameron give a talk he said how in the early 80s he had a room with three typewriters; one for Aliens, one for Rambo II and one for I believe The Abyss. He would rotate to each one and wrote them simultaneously. Pretty cool story I think. Anyways, I dig Commando as well as the Rambo films. I was unaware that people didn't like the Rambo movies, nor was I aware that people liked Commando but didn't like Rambo. They seem like they're cut from the same cloth. Don't disturb my friend. He's dead tired.

While this is true of the sequels, the original film First Blood was not. It was a serious look at the perils of dealing with PTSD in an era when mostly nothing but scorn was heaped upon returning Vietnam War vets. The film also dealt with the problem of law enforcement officers who feel like they have the right to act above the law.

It has a higher body count (somehow), a better sense of humor, a much better star, less stupid political content, and a scene where a dude gets thrown off a cliff after being told that he in fact wasn't going to be killed last.

Honestly though I won't take sides comparing the two. I've seen them both dozens of times (literally) I find them highly enjoyable in the 'let me watch something with nachos and beer' sense.

He's dead tired. That is pretty neat actually, my mind would be spinning doing that writing process but the rush must be a lot of fun. I usually write one thing at a time and sometimes that burns me out, especially when random ideas for other projects pop into my head. Maybe I'll try writing two at a time, I'm intrigued by Cameron's process there, nice share Dooms. I don't mind the Rambo films, the original is definitely a solid film, but Part II shocked me as the worst of the bunch. It was boring and repetitive and bogged itself down with tired political statements, but "Rambo III" was just all out badass action and eye rolling one-liners. Plus it's funny to watch it in retrospect as Rambo teams up with Afghanistan rebels to save the day. III is the closer film to "Commando", but I still take Arnie in that one too. (Neverending will come in here and say of course you would)

I like Rambo III more than Commando. It's an epic action film. And the fact that Rambo teams up with the Afghans to fight the Russians is irrelevant because that's exactly what the United States did at the time.

THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORYNormally I do this later in the week but I have something else planned. 10 years ago was the release of tabloid darling Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action-comedy opened with $50.3 million and probably made A LOT more for the gossip industry because during production of the film Pitt cheated on then-wife Jennifer Aniston with Jolie. The release of this movie created a circus that sort-of continues to this day. Also released 10 years ago was PG Cooper 's childhood favorite The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. It opened at #5 with $12.5 million and destroyed any good faith that director Robert Rodriguez had built with Sin City. 15 years ago Nicolas Cage ended Mission: Impossible II's 2-week dominance with Gone in 60 Seconds. Fueled by Deexan 's love , it opened with $25.3 million. 30 years ago, THE GOONIES made its debut. This beloved children's classic from director Richard Donner, executive producer Steven Spielberg and writer Chris Columbus opened at #2, behind Rambo: First Blood Part II, with $9.1 million. That's right Doomsday and SnoBorderZero , Rambo was #1 for a month. And like Fletch the week before, The Goonies found an audience and went on to become the 9th highest grossing film of 1985. 35 years ago, Urban Cowboy became one of John Travolta's last hits before allegedly turning into a nobody for a decade. This theory only works if you ignore the Look Who's Talking trilogy which thebtskink refuses to do.
