THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORY15 years ago, Tom Cruise returned to the Mission: Impossible franchise with a John Woo spectacle that set the box office on fire but left people scratching their head. The movie opened on a Wednesday and by Monday (which was Memorial Day) it had grossed $91.8 million. That's $138.8 million in today's money. PhantomKnight PG Cooper Dracula20 years ago was also Memorial Day Weekend and a bunch of random movies were released. The #1 movie was Casper. Seriously. The Steven Spielberg produced live-action Casper where Christina Ricci falls in love with a dead child dominated the box office. It grossed $22 million. That's $41 million in today's cash. Braveheart, the Mel Gibson epic which went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, opened at #3. The Keanu Reeves' sci-fi joke, Johnny Mnemonic, opened at #6. And the Drew Barrymore & Chris O'Donnell romantic drama, Mad Love, opened at #7. We all know which movie Doomsday went to watch for his 10th birthday. Nilade thebtskink25 years ago was also Memorial Day Weekend and the #1 movie was Back to the Future Part III. It grossed $23.7 million which is $45.5 million in today's inflation. Jibbs

Braveheart helped bridge the gap between kids movies and adult movies for me. The battle scenes haven't been matched to this day.

Braveheart blew me away the first time I saw it. Braveheart opening in May of 1995 and going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars might be a good omen for Mad Max: Fury Road Braveheart helped bridge the gap between kids movies and adult movies for me. We're in the same age-group so that's my experience as well. I had seen many R-rated movies before Braveheart but they were mostly action movies and you can definitely describe them as juvenile-at-heart. Braveheart. The Shawshank Redemption. Forrest Gump. Dances with Wolves. Those were the more serious movies that broke down the whole wall between child and adult cinema. Then there's seemingly forgotten movies like Robert De Niro and Robin Williams' Awakenings and Al Pacino and Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way and Michael Keaton's My Life and that Ridley Scott movie White Squall that also made an impact in my prepubescent days.

Everyone misses Mel Gibson. Only no one admits it... At least in Hollywood anyway

Man when I was a teenager I used to have the biggest crush on Christina Ricci. Only reason I ever watched anything she was in.

Pointy cheek bones. Built like a 10 year old boy, only sadder looking because they can't remember what a candy bar tastes like.

Good news for Doomsday and SnoBorderZero . The #1 movie this weekend is San Andreas with $53.2 million. Not only are you guys going through a game changing drought but mass audiences are watching your home get destroyed on the big screen. If that wasn't bad enough, the #2 movie this weekend is the unstoppable Pitch Perfect 2 with $14.3 million. The movie has grossed a total of $147.5 million so far. At #3 is the first big flop of the summer, Tomorrowland. Despite all the praise by FShuttari , Disney's latest theme park based movie has only grossed $63 million in two weeks. But don't get too sad. Mad Max: Fury Road has grossed $115.9 million since its release. That's not spectacular box office but it's respectable for an R-rated sequel in a cult franchise. Opening on Friday is Entourage: The Movie, Insidious Chapter 3 and Melissa McCarthy's Spy.

People are really easy to please, why the hell is anyone watching these shitty disaster flicks, I never understood the appeal. Boring weekend of releases this last weekend, and not much better this next one. I think I'll go see Mad Max again.

Thankfully most of my friends think Entourage is as lame and douchey as I do, so I think I'll luck out.

Tomorrowland deserves better!
Also Mel Gibson last epic will be Vikings eventually... I really think Hollywood will budge down the road.

Boring weekend of releases this last weekend, and not much better this next one. I think I'll go see Mad Max again. That's exactly what it was a shitty disaster flick. The only reason I went to see it because it was my friends birthday and he loves those type of movies. Some bad acting, cheesy dialogue, things that didn't make sense, and a pointless movie all together. The only bright side to the movie was good special effects.

THIS WEEK IN BOX OFFICE HISTORYHAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY TO TOTAL RECALL! SnoBorderZeroThe Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven classic opened at #1 with $25.5 million. That's $49 million when adjusted for inflation. It went on to become the 7th highest grossing film of 1990. It was sandwiched inbetween The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard 2. HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY TO FLETCH! thebtskink NiladeFletch is arguably the best Chevy Chase movie and one of the greatest comedies of all-time. Although if you asked Doomsday he would tell you it's a piece of shit. Fletch opened at #2, behind Rambo: First Blood Part II, and grossed $7 million. That may not seem like a lot - and it isn't - but the film caught on with audiences and became a sleeper hit. By the end of 1985 it was the 12th highest grossing movie of the year. That may not seem too impressive, so let me put into terms you may better understand. It made more money than Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando.
